How we test balance boards

Four criteria decide whether a balance board suits you. Here is each one, and how the Stavik board answers it.

Our criteria

1. A published deck size and load rating. Without them a board cannot be matched to your foot or your weight. The Stavik deck measures 43.5 by 33 centimetres, 7.5 centimetres tall at rest, and the board is rated to 158 kilos (350 lb).
2. Deck length against your foot. A EU size 46 foot runs about 30 centimetres. On a 33-centimetre deck that leaves roughly a finger’s width of board on either side — comfortable for two-footed standing, tight for single-leg work. Measure your own foot before you choose.
3. Research with its certainty attached. Every clinical figure we publish carries the number of trials, the number of participants, the confidence interval and the certainty rating assigned by the reviewers. A result from 39 trials rated high-certainty and a result from 7 trials rated low-certainty are not the same claim, and we write them differently.
4. Safety documentation, named. The age range, the maximum load, the surface requirements, and whether a board is certified for use by children. Products intended for children fall under separate toy safety rules. The Stavik board is an adult board: it carries no EN 71 certificate and no CPC, and it is made for use in shoes.
